Dave Chale

Founder, Head Engineer

Dave has two decades of audio engineering experience working as a recording, mixing, and live engineer. He first opened the doors to DeadBird Studios in 2008 and hand built the studio over the years with the help of friends and colleagues. He has worked as a guest engineer at Ardent Studios, Sonic Ranch, and Prairie Sun Recording, and was head of production at Louisville music venues Zazoos and The New Vintage. Dave has worked as FOH and monitor engineer at Mercury Ballroom, Odeon, Iroquois Amphitheater, and Abbey Road On The River music festival and Louder Than Life music festival, as well as the touring FOH engineer for Low Cut Connie and Tyler Lance Walker Gill. He also spent years touring and recording as the drummer for many local and international acts, including Wax Fang and Quiet Hollers.

Dave received Engineer of the Year in 2013 and 2014 from the Lousiville Music Awards, and a Judges’ Choice Award from Berklee College of Music. His work on Low Cut Connie’s Dirty Pictures Pt. 2 received 4 stars in Rolling Stone, and Cabin’s Among The Rectangles and Changeable Parts earned WFPK’s Album of the Year in 2010, as well as Song of the Year for “A Lie Worth Believing”.

 
 
 

Tom Curtis

Engineer

Tom has decades of audio engineering experience and has worked with many of the top artists in the region and beyond, Including otis junior and the jesse lees, Bonnie “prince” Billy, John Clay, and Jacob Bannon’s Wear your wounds. When he’s not at deadbird, he’s behind the faders at Zanzabar, Louisville’s Legendary live music venue. His dedication and unrelenting drive for excellence are part of the reason DeadBird is here today.

 
 
 

J Mitchell

Engineer

J is our newest addition to the DeadBird team. He graduated from Portland Community College for Recording Arts & Music Performance. His instrumental focus is guitar, bass, and piano, but he can play just about any instrument. Before starting his tenure at DeadBird, he honed his craft performing and recording with more than 20 artists from Portland OR, Indianapolis IN, and Louisville KY, and producing 4 full albums and a slew of EP’s and singles. His production and performance work includes Nellie Pearl’s Lonesome No More, which won 2016’s album of the year at the Louisville Musc Awards, and most recently Sydney Sleadd and the Swarm’s Creature Untamed, which earned “Band of the Year”, “Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year“ from the 2024 LEO Weekly’s Reader’s Choice Awards. He is a fresh new talent and an excellent producer and engineer, and is a very welcome addition to our staff.
